In the fourth century, in North Africa, a mother named Monica prayed for years for her son. He had walked away from everything she taught him.

She followed him across the sea, to Carthage, to Rome, to Milan, still praying. A bishop told her that a son of so many tears could not be lost.

That son was Augustine. He told her story himself, in his Confessions.
